Evie Richards: Briton makes history with victory at cross-country short track World Cup in Brazil

Great Britain's Evie Richards has become the most successful female short track cross-country rider ever with victory in Brazil. The 28-year-old won the second round of the UCI Cross-country Short Track (XCC) World Cup in Araxa, a week after she finished first in the opening round. The victory was the reigning world champion's seventh in the format, overtaking Olympic champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot as the most successful elite woman in XCC history. Richards was pushed until the end by Switzerland's Nicole Koller and Sweden's Jenny Rissveds, but kept them at bay during a sprint for the line. "I think when you're world champion and you're leading the series, there's a lot of pressure, so I was really nervous before," she said. "We had a bit of a rough plan, but nothing changes too much. You've just got to [think] on your feet and depending on how the race goes, you can't really have a plan." American Christopher Blevins t...

Manchester City: Jack Grealish and Phil Foden do not 'feel good' after Manchester derby incidents

Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Jack Grealish was a second-half substitute at Old Trafford Chief football news reporter Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden and Jack Grealish do not "feel good" after incidents involving fans at the Manchester derby, but believes it is a societal problem rather than blaming Manchester United. Earlier this week, a 20-year-old man was charged with assault after Grealish was allegedly slapped as he walked into the Old Trafford tunnel following Sunday's 0-0 draw. Fellow England international Foden also had to deal with derogatory chants about his mother by United fans during the first half, which Guardiola later said showed "a lack of class" . United have privately condemned the chants but the Football Association has decided not to charge the club . Asked how Grealish and Foden were feeling, Guardiola said: "He doesn't feel good but we move forward. "It's a crazy world. Nobody is awa...

Jimmy White: Snooker legend fails in bid to appear at Crucible after World Championship qualifying defeat

Jimmy White's wait for another appearance at the Crucible Theatre will stretch to two decades after he was beaten in World Championship qualifying. The 62-year-old lost 10-5 to Ashley Carty in the second round of the qualifying tournament held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. White, now ranked 93 in the world, has not appeared at the Crucible since a first-round defeat back in 2006 and has lost in qualifying every year since. He famously reached the final of the tournament six times between 1984 and 1994 during his prime but lost on every occasion. White had started his 45th World Championship campaign with a thrilling late-night victory over Ukraine's Anton Kazakov earlier in the week. On that occasion 'the Whirlwind' rolled back the years to win six frames on the bounce to seal victory, but there was to be no repeat against Carty. Rotherham's Carty raced into a 5-1 lead and although White took the next two frames - including a break of 107...

Netball Super League: Emily Andrew helps London Mavericks to 67-56 win over Nottingham Forest

London Mavericks moved up to second in the Netball Super League with a 67-56 win over Nottingham Forest. Australian goal shooter Emily Andrew led the way for the Mavericks with 41 goals while Emma Thacker chipped in with six. The Mavericks have won four of their opening five matches and leapfrog Manchester Thunder into second spot. They are level with unbeaten leaders London Pulse on 12 points having played a game more than their city rivals. The Mavericks were in front after the first quarter and at half-time for the first time in a league fixture this season. Andrew was inevitably prominent in the scoring at the Motorpoint Arena as Camilla Buchanan's side established a 35-27 lead at the mid point. Forest produced a brilliant third quarter as they brought a 12-point deficit down to just two points to trail 47-45 thanks to Rolene Streutker's clinical shooting. However, the Mavericks raised their game in the final quarter and eventually managed to pull away as Forest...

Osasuna appeal over Barcelona player's eligibility for La Liga match dismissed by RFEF

Osasuna's appeal over Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez's eligibility to play against them has been dismissed. Martinez did not join up with the Spain squad for the recent international break because of a knee injury. Fifa rules prohibit a player from playing for his club within five days - unless he has the national FA's permission - if he has not linked up with his country when called up. Barca's 3-0 win over Osasuna in La Liga, rearranged from 8 March after the death of club doctor Carles Minarro Garcia, came the day after the international window ended - and four days after Spain's Nations League match with the Netherlands. Martinez played the full 90 minutes against Osasuna on 27 March and the Basque club launched an appeal to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) a day later. However, the RFEF's competition committee deemed there was no infringement by Barcelona, as the player's withdrawal process was carried out correctly and in accor...

Steve Diamond: Newcastle boss receives six-game ban for abusing match official

Newcastle Falcons consultant director of rugby Steve Diamond has been handed a six-match ban for abusing match officials by the Rugby Football Union. The incident occurred at the end of Newcastle's 17-15 defeat away to Exeter Chiefs on 29 March. Diamond was upset about Exeter's match-winning try in the last minute being awarded and angrily confronted the officials after the game. But he has been found guilty by a three-person disciplinary panel of conduct "prejudicial towards the interest of the game". The former Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors boss will not be involved with his squad on a matchday until an hour after the final whistle for the last five games of this Premiership season and the first friendly before next season. Diamond appeared before the independent disciplinary panel and admitted the breach of RFU Rule 5.12 - conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game and/or Union. In summary, Sam Hillas KC, the chair of the disciplinary panel de...

Carlos Alcaraz: World number one has 'missed clay' after reaching semi-finals with win over Arthur Fils

Carlos Alcaraz says he "missed" playing on clay after he booked his place in the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters with a spirited fightback. The Spaniard, 21, came from a set down to clinch a 4-6 7-5 6-3 victory over Frenchman Arthur Fils to secure his spot in the last four. French Open champion Alcaraz will now face compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who beat Australia's Alexei Popyrin in straight sets, on Saturday for a place in the final. World number three Alcaraz saved three break points in the 11th game of the second set in a thrilling tussle with 20-year-old Fils. Alcaraz said he had to "stay strong" and "wait for chances" against Fils before he was able to capitalise on any errors. "I think his level is high right now and he puts a lot of pressure on his opponents," Alcaraz said. "Today I could feel it but in some moments he just made a few mistakes and I tried to make the most of those points. "I have...

Vivianne Miedema: Manchester City forward may miss rest of season with hamstring injury

Manchester City forward Vivianne Miedema may miss the rest of the season because of a hamstring injury. The 28-year-old suffered the problem during the Netherlands' 3-1 defeat of Austria on Tuesday - just 15 minutes after she was introduced as a substitute. Miedema will miss City's Women's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United on Sunday, and may not feature again in this campaign with only four Women's Super League matches remaining. "She's with the medical team, she's positive, we're positive, but it's not looking good in the sense of imminently being able to impact any of our games" said City interim boss Nick Cushing on Friday. "It's hugely disappointing for Viv because of the role she's played on the pitch, she's been so pivotal in the results. "She's played a huge role in dragging this team up and she's still doing the same today in the meeting room and on the training pitch. "She's g...

James Anderson: England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker to get knighthood

England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker James Anderson is to be given a knighthood for services to cricket. Anderson, 42, retired from Test cricket last summer with 704 wickets, making him the most successful pace bowler in the format. He made his first appearance for England in a one-day international against Australia in December 2002 before his Test debut in May 2003. Anderson went on to play 188 Tests, 194 ODIs and 19 T20 internationals for England during an international career which spanned two decades. The Lancashire player has been given the knighthood in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's resignation honours list - the only sportsperson to be given an award. England and Wales Cricket Board chair Richard Thompson said it was "a really well-deserved honour" for an "England legend" who has "given so much to our sport". "Jimmy's career has been marked by extraordinary achievements, not least in winning the Ashes four...

Northampton Saints v Castres: George Furbank returns on bench as hosts name unchanged XV

Club captain Furbank is included in the matchday squad for the first time since December after recovering from a fractured arm which ruled him out of this year's Six Nations, while there is also room among the replacements for Scotland prop Elliot Millar Mills. The hosts, who won their only Champions Cup title in 2000, have opted for a five-three split on the bench as prop Luke Green and back row Angus Scott-Young miss out from the squad which beat Clermont Auvergne in the last 16. Castres, who shocked Saracens on their last visit to England, ma...

Football transgender policy: Transgender women can continue playing under new rules

Transgender women will be allowed to continue to compete in women's football in England provided they meet stricter eligibility criteria, the Football Association has said. The criteria in the FA's updated trans policy includes meeting reduced testosterone levels and "match observation" to evaluate if the player "presents a risk" to the safety of other players and fair competition. The FA says a new formal process will give the governing body "ultimate discretion" over eligibility and it will be managed on a "case-by-case basis". Campaigners have been calling for the FA to update its transgender policy, with an estimated 100 protesters calling for change before England's men's match against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in November. Sports such as rugby union, rugby league and hockey restrict women's competition to players that have not gone through male puberty. The FA says there are 20 transgender women regi...

Mohamed Salah signs new Liverpool deal: Contract extends perfect sporting marriage with Reds

'Perfect marriage goes on - Liverpool and Salah need each other' Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Mohamed Salah is both the leading scorer and leading provider of assists in the Premier League this season Mohamed Salah's new contract is the perfect outcome for all involved with Liverpool and delivers confirmation that both parties in this sporting marriage simply cannot live without each other. Salah, even though he is 33 in June, would have received lucrative offers from elsewhere had he decided to leave Anfield on a free transfer when his current £350,000-a-week agreement ends at the conclusion of this season. The availability of this world-class talent, as driven as ever and seemingly still at the peak of physical powers, would have attracted the attention of the biggest European names as well as sparking renewed interest from the Saudi Pro League, that arguably prizes the signing of Salah above all others when measured by current global profile. It wa...

Marc Skinner: Man Utd boss says 'you can't please everybody'

Marc Skinner accepts he is "not going to please everybody" in the Manchester United fanbase after a mixed reaction to the announcement of his new contract. Manager Skinner, 42, recently signed a two-year extension until June 2027, with the option of an extra 12 months. United sit third in the Women's Super League with the best defensive record in the division. They have also reached the Women's FA Cup semi-finals, where they play local rivals Manchester City on Sunday. Asked if he has silenced his critics this season, Skinner told BBC Sport: "I don't ever think of it that way. I genuinely respect everybody and their opinion." But knowing some supporters would like to see him replaced is an uncomfortable truth. "It's not nice to hear, of course not," Skinner said. "I am human. My energy is always to my team and for the fans, it's not to try and prove people wrong." Skinner is the longest-serving current manager in th...

Swansea City: Alan Sheehan 'a very good candidate' for head coach job - Josh Key

Josh Key says Alan Sheehan deserves credit for turning round Swansea City's form and believes the Irishman is a "very good candidate" to become head coach on a permanent basis. Swansea look to have secured their Championship status for next season after Wednesday's resounding win over Plymouth Argyle took them beyond the second tier's traditional 50-point safety mark. The club have spent much of 2025 glancing nervously towards the bottom three, thanks largely to a run of seven defeats in nine league games which led to former boss Luke Williams' departure in February. Since then, caretaker head coach Sheehan has helped Swansea claim 14 points from eight league games to ease relegation concerns. Key, a goalscorer in the Plymouth victory, says Swansea's players "want to do well" for Sheehan and have proved as much with recent performances. "First of all I don't want to slate Luke because he was a great guy and a great coach and I f...
