Jhon Duran: Aston Villa striker charged by FA after red card reaction at Newcastle

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association following his angry reaction to being sent off at Newcastle United on Boxing Day. The Colombian was red-carded when he was adjudged to have deliberately stamped on Magpies defender Fabian Schar during Villa's 3-0 defeat at St James' Park. Villa appealed against the 21-year-old's three-game ban but that was rejected by the FA. Duran has now been served with an additional charge of improper conduct for his response to the dismissal, as he kicked a water bottle after leaving the pitch and had to be restrained by a member of Villa's backroom staff. Duran has until 3 January to respond. Should he be found guilty of improper conduct, he could be facing further costly punishment. Villa drew 2-2 with Brighton on Monday night as Duran served the first game of his three-match ban. Unai Emery's side face Leicester City in the Premier League on 4 January and West Ham in th...

Most anticipated films coming to cinemas in 2025

It's been a rollercoaster year for Hollywood. Movie fans flocked to the cinema in 2024, with Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked dominating the worldwide box office. Beetlejuice came out of retirement to entertain new audiences, while the likes of Alien: Romulus and Longlegs scared cinemagoers into parting with their cash. However, the past few years have been tumultuous for the film industry. After COVID all but wiped out trips to see a movie on the silver screen, studios are now having to contend with the cost of living crisis and audiences preferring to wait for digital releases. There was even the double-whammy of industrial action waged by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA which shuttered production for months and led to delays in the release calendar. In 2023, the successful simultaneous theatrical release of Barbie and Oppenheimer - two movies collectively known as Barbenheimer - ...

Business, the economy and the pound in your pocket - what to expect from 2025

UK business goes into the new year in a surly mood. New Chancellor Rachel Reeves 's hike in employer's National Insurance contributions (NICs) in her autumn budget will raise the cost of employing people and that is likely to have an impact on both hiring and investment. For individual sectors, there are specific challenges: the car industry, for example, is still grappling with the threat of penalties where electric vehicles are too low a proportion of their overall sales. Consumer-facing businesses are also under considerable pressure, not only from the rise in employer's NICs but also the forthcoming rise in the national living wage, something which particularly hurts the hospitality sector. That sector, along with retail, also faces a challenge in that consumer confidence remains subdued. The plight of retailers was underlined by a spate of profit warnings just before Christmas, since when there has been evidence of weak footfall in the sales perio...

Harlan Coben: How the best-selling crime writer became a Netflix sensation - with the help of Richard Armitage

"If somebody tells you they don't care how their show or book is received, they're just flat out lying to you." Harlan Coben - one of the world's most successful crime writers - doesn't mince his words: "Every writer you've ever interviewed wants two things, better reviews and a bigger audience." The 62-year-old American author has published 37 books and sold more than 80 million copies in 46 languages since his debut nearly 35 years ago, and he is not too proud to admit he's enjoying his success. Coben tells Sky News: "It's thrilling to know this many people are watching your shows or reading your books, to deny that is stupid and silly." Utterly binge-able, his tales of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary situations have found a home on Netflix, neatly curated as the Harlan Coben Collection. With nine shows and counting, last year's breakout hit Fool Me Once was Netflix's most-watched series...

China December new home prices rise a touch faster, survey shows

BEIJING () - Prices of new homes in China rose at a slightly faster pace in December, a private survey showed on Wednesday, as the crisis-hit property sector struggles to find a bottom on the heels of a slew of supportive government policies. The average price of new homes across 100 cities edged up 0.37% from a month earlier, compared with the 0.36% rise in November, according to data from property researcher China Index Academy. On a year-on-year basis, the average price rose 2.68% in December, versus 2.40% growth in the previous month. Official data for home prices will be released by China's statistics bureau on Jan. 17. China's policymakers in recent months doubled down on their efforts to revive the sector, which crashed in 2021 after a government-led campaign to rein in indebted developers left them severely cash-strapped. Since September, measures aimed at encouraging homebuying have included cutting mortgage rates and minimum down-payments, as well as tax ince...

West Ham striker Michail Antonio says he is "grateful" to be alive after sustaining a broken leg in a car accident. The Jamaica international needed to be released from his car after becoming trapped during the incident on 7 December in Epping, Essex, and was taken to a central London hospital. "Every year around this time, I'm asked what I'm grateful for, and every year I've struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I'm grateful for: being alive," Antonio wrote on Instagram. His social media post included a photograph of himself standing with crutches. "I've spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, the next year, always assuming tomorrow was guaranteed. I've seen close friends pass away, witnessed others face near-death ...

Business and Trade Committee calls for government to be fined as Post Office victims face

A committee of MPs has called for the government to be fined if it fails to provide redress quickly enough to victims of the Horizon software scandal, as its report said the Post Office has spent at least £136m on legal fees. New legally enforceable time limits for each stage of claim processing should be introduced, a report from the Business and Trade Committee (BTC) has said. If a claim by a victim of the Post Office Horizon scandal does not move in line with the time limits they should receive the financial penalties paid by the government. More than 700 sub-postmasters across the UK were wrongfully prosecuted by the Post Office for theft and false accounting using the Horizon software made by Fujitsu which incorrectly generated shortfalls in branches.
